The wear and tear that a deck in Canada goes through can be significant. Not only do we have a rainy, wet spring, but we also have a scorching summer, a fall that exposes the deck to rotting leaves, and a winter that plops down mountains of snow on top of it. Whether your deck has taken its damage over time, or you accidentally scraped it with the snow shovel last year, it could be time to make some repairs. While you may think your deck needs to be completely removed and a new deck installed in its place, there are things you can do to breathe new life into your old deck so you can enjoy it for years to come. Here are three steps that you need to take to get your deck looking brand new.
The first thing that you need to do with your old deck and inspect it for deficiencies. Make sure you look at any part of the deck that comes in contact with the ground, such as posts and stairs. Next, inspect that all the connections are in working order and that there is no mould. Once you know that your deck is structurally sound, then fixing it becomes an issue of cosmetic damage. If there are any damaged boards, then they need to be removed, and a new board needs to be put in to replace them. Nails should be tapped down that are sticking out, or taken out and replaced with screws.
Something that often goes before the rest of the deck is the railing. If the railing is falling apart or if it does not appear like it would support someone leaning on it, then it needs to come down and be fully replaced with a new, safe rail system.
After you have finished getting the repairs done to your old deck to make it structurally sound, you need to have it washed. You will need to decide whether you are going to soft wash the deck or power wash the deck. Soft washing involves wetting the deck and then using the cleaner with a stiff-bristle brush and a whole lot of elbow grease to scrub the solution into the wood. Power washing is using a power washing machine to spray dirt and grime away from the deck. Power washing does take less effort, but there is a higher chance of something going wrong. You will want to use a fan nozzle instead of a pinpoint one, as a pinpoint nozzle can dig into the wood.
You always want to wear eye protection and proper gloves when you are working with chemicals or a power washer. Make sure to protect nearby plants and grass as well, as the chemicals in the cleaner can harm them.
Applying a Stain or Paint
While you can apply a stain or paint yourself, you run the risk of the stain drying blotchy or losing paint to the dirt under the deck if you are not careful. If you do it yourself, then the best method is to spray on the first coat of stain or paint and then use a roller to sop up any puddles. This may not get you the results you want though, and going with a professional will make sure that the stain, or paint, is done properly and will last throughout the seasons.
